Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested a man posing as a soldier in Jos, the Plateau State capital, as security agencies intensify efforts to restore order following recent violence.
The suspect was apprehended in Angwan Rukuba, an area in Jos North Local Government Area that has been at the centre of renewed unrest, and was immediately taken to the police headquarters in Jos.
Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, disclosed that the suspect would be paraded before journalists by the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah.
In a statement inviting members of the press, the command said, “This is to inform you that the Plateau State Police Command has arrested a ‘fake soldier’ in Angwan Rukuba. Therefore, the Commissioner of Police will be parading the suspect today by 05:30 pm prompt.”
The arrest comes as security agencies continue operations to stabilise the city following a recent deadly attack in the same community that reportedly claimed at least 28 lives.
Tensions in Jos have remained high despite the relaxation of a 48-hour curfew earlier imposed by the Plateau State Government to contain the violence.
Amid the deteriorating security situation, the University of Jos ordered students to vacate its hostels, citing safety concerns.
The police command had earlier assured residents that efforts were ongoing to restore peace and maintain law and order, with the arrest of the impersonator seen as part of broader measures to address security challenges in the state.
Further details regarding the suspect’s activities are expected to be disclosed during the police briefing.
