Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign from his position to pursue the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 general elections, according to sources familiar with the development.

The anticipated resignation is linked to a directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, requiring all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was conveyed in a statement by Dewan Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Sources said Tuggar’s expected move follows the recent national convention of the All Progressives Congress, after which attention has shifted to cabinet members believed to be nursing political ambitions.

Supporters of the minister from Bauchi State, who attended the convention, hinted that a formal declaration of his governorship bid could be imminent, citing growing support for his candidacy.

Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and politician, previously represented Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. He later served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, before his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2023.

With the resignation deadline approaching, attention is now focused on political appointees expected to comply with the President’s directive as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
