Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he has stepped aside from active politics, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Atiku Media Office refuted circulating social media reports alleging that the former presidential candidate announced his retirement during a meeting with stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The media team clarified that Atiku had not held any recent meeting with ADC stakeholders at the national level, noting that his only recent engagement was with party stakeholders in Adamawa State last Thursday.
It stressed that a decision as significant as withdrawing from active politics would not be communicated through rumours or unofficial channels.
“An issue as fundamental and consequential as exiting active politics cannot, and would never, be communicated through rumours, faceless sources, or third-party fabrication. Such a decision, if ever taken, would be formally conveyed through the Atiku Media Office,” the statement read.
The media office further described the claims as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at creating confusion and misleading the public.
It alleged that the narrative may have been sponsored by political opponents seeking to undermine Atiku’s influence, insisting that anti-democratic elements were unsettled by what it described as a growing national consensus for change.
The statement urged supporters of Atiku, members of the ADC, and Nigerians at large to disregard the reports and remain focused on efforts to rebuild the country.
