Nigeria’s political community is in mourning following the death of former Delta State Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue, who passed away at the age of 85.
Chief Elue served as Deputy Governor to James Ibori between 1999 and 2007, during the formative years of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. His death was announced amid tributes describing him as a loyal patriot, seasoned administrator and committed party stalwart.
Reacting to the news, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed deep sorrow, saying the state received the development with shock and pain, but also gratitude to God for what he described as a fulfilled life of service.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor said Elue’s contributions to the growth and stability of Delta State would remain indelible. He noted that the late deputy governor was not only a distinguished politician but also a respected teacher who devoted his life to mentoring younger generations.
Oborevwori praised Elue’s calm disposition, wisdom and commitment to unity, saying these qualities strengthened democratic governance in Delta State, particularly in the early years of civilian rule. He described him as “a man of honour and integrity who served our dear state with passion and loyalty,” adding that his service to Delta would remain evergreen.
The governor extended condolences to the Elue family, the people of Aniocha North, Delta North Senatorial District and the entire state, praying for strength and comfort for those he left behind.
Meanwhile, Anambra State is also grieving the loss of Rt. Hon. D. B. Afam Obi, former Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
In a statement released on Saturday, Obi’s family confirmed his passing, describing him as a respected leader, devoted father and pillar of strength within his community. “With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rt. Hon. D. B. Afam Obi, former Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly,” the statement read.
The family said the late lawmaker dedicated his life to public service, integrity and grassroots development, leaving an enduring impact on the people. They added that his legacy of quiet strength, wisdom and commitment to societal growth would continue to inspire generations.
The late Obi hailed from Ihembosi in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in due course.
With the passing of Elue and Obi, Delta and Anambra States have lost two experienced public servants whose careers helped shape executive and legislative governance in their respective regions.
