Security forces fighting insurgency in the North-East have recorded another major breakthrough after killing a senior Boko Haram commander, Abu Khalid, during a coordinated night operation in Borno State.

Abu Khalid, who was reported to be the second-in-command within the Sambisa Forest network, was brought down along with 10 other fighters during the offensive carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI.

Military insiders said the operation took place around the Komala area of Konduga Local Government Area at about 11 p.m., following intelligence on terrorist movement in the zone. The troops were supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force under an ongoing clearance mission.

His death came shortly after another insurgent commander known as Julaibib was killed in a separate military action within the Gujba axis of the Timbuktu Triangle, showing what security officials described as sustained pressure on terrorist leadership.

Sources within the Army said Abu Khalid played a strategic role in planning attacks and moving supplies for fighters across the Sambisa corridor.

Weapons and other items recovered after the gun battle include several assault rifles, ammunition magazines, bicycles, medical supplies and food materials believed to belong to the group.

No casualty was recorded on the side of the troops, according to officials familiar with the operation.

The military said ongoing operations are still underway across Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains and other known insurgent enclaves, with commanders assuring that the campaign will continue until armed groups are completely dismantled.

Top military authorities have also praised the soldiers involved, describing their efforts as critical to restoring peace and stability in the North-East.
