Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has been thrown into mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died on Tuesday after a road accident in Delta State.

Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was said to have been involved in a crash in Umunede and was immediately taken to a hospital in nearby Agbor, where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The death was announced by Ndidi’s Turkish club, Beşiktaş, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the midfielder’s father.

“May Allah have mercy on the deceased. We offer our heartfelt condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and all his loved ones,” the club said in a message shared on X.

Ndidi, who recently took over the captaincy of the Super Eagles from William Troost-Ekong, led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The tournament was particularly memorable for the midfielder, as he scored his first-ever goal for the national team.

During the competition, Ndidi spoke warmly of his father and recalled his admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo while explaining the inspiration behind his goal celebration against Tunisia.

Following the announcement of his father’s death, messages of condolence have continued to pour in from fans, teammates, and members of the Nigerian football community.
