… Ibadan monarch snubs Oyo king’s handshake

Fresh tension has erupted within the Oyo State Traditional Council following an awkward scene involving the Alaafin of Oyo and the Olubadan of Ibadanland at a public function in Ibadan.

The incident occurred at the 2026 Interfaith Gathering held at the Secretariat, Grand Space, behind the Oyo State House of Assembly, where traditional rulers, government officials and other dignitaries were in attendance.

Eyewitnesses said drama ensued when the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, extended his hand in what appeared to be a courteous gesture toward the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdulrashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja. The move, however, was reportedly ignored as the Olubadan went ahead to greet Governor Seyi Makinde and other top officials before taking his seat.

The public snub instantly drew murmurs across the venue and has since triggered intense reactions across Oyo State and beyond.

A source at the event claimed the development shocked many attendees. “Everyone noticed it. It was embarrassing and clearly showed that all is not well among the traditional rulers,” the source said.

Some Ibadan indigenes, however, blamed the Alaafin for initiating the handshake, arguing that the hierarchy among monarchs should have been respected. Others described the Olubadan’s action as unnecessary and capable of worsening existing cracks within the traditional council.

The incident has reopened conversations about the lingering rivalry and cold relations among royal fathers in the state, with many expressing concern that such public displays could weaken the authority and respect traditionally accorded to the institution.

Governor Makinde, who witnessed the episode, has so far remained silent, while the Olubadan has also declined to react publicly, further fuelling speculation.

Since the incident, social media has been awash with arguments, accusations and calls for explanation, with some Nigerians urging both monarchs to sheath their swords in the interest of peace.

Observers warn that if not quickly addressed, the rift could spiral into a deeper crisis capable of undermining traditional governance in Oyo State.

As tempers flare and opinions remain divided, many residents are calling for intervention and reconciliation, insisting that royal fathers must rise above personal differences to preserve the dignity of the throne and the unity of the people.
