Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, heightening speculation over a possible defection ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the meeting took place in Kano and was attended by key APC figures, including the party’s state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, and a member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, alongside other party stakeholders.

Although details of the discussions were not officially disclosed, the engagement has intensified political debate around Yusuf’s future, amid persistent rumours that he may be considering a move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the APC.

In recent months, Kano’s political landscape has been awash with reports of behind-the-scenes talks between the governor and senior APC figures at both the state and national levels. The speculation gained momentum following Yusuf’s frequent public appearances with APC leaders and his increasingly conciliatory posture toward the ruling party.

Yusuf emerged governor in 2023 on the platform of the NNPP, backed by former Kano State governor and NNPP leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso. However, reports of internal tensions and strained relations within the party’s national leadership have continued to trail his administration.

The latest meeting represents the most significant public engagement so far between the Kano governor and APC leadership, further fuelling discussions over a possible political realignment as the 2027 elections draw closer.
