A final-year student of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has died in a motorcade accident that occurred during post-examination celebrations on Monday.

The student was part of a convoy of fresh graduates who took to the highway shortly after completing their signing-out activities. Witnesses said the group drove recklessly and ignored basic safety rules while celebrating their final day on campus.

The accident happened when the deceased attempted to overtake a moving truck but crashed into a stationary vehicle parked by the roadside.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo State, Cyril Mathew, said one person died and five others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“The students, after writing their last paper, took to the road in a convoy. In the process, one of them overtook another vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck,” Mathew said.

He urged students to prioritize safety and avoid dangerous celebrations, advising them to “celebrate within campus areas” and reminding them that “there is life after graduation.”
