A dawn fire on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, swept through the popular Jabi wood market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, destroying several shops and property valued at millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning, sending thick smoke billowing into the air as traders and nearby residents scrambled to rescue goods from the affected structures.
Firefighters from both the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service arrived promptly after receiving distress calls and worked for hours to contain the blaze.
An official of the FCT Fire Service confirmed that no casualties had been reported as of press time, noting that an investigation had begun to determine the cause of the incident.
Traders counted heavy losses, including burnt equipment, building materials, and finished wood products. Many appealed to the government for urgent intervention to help them rebuild their businesses.
Authorities have pledged to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the damage and urged market operators to strictly observe fire safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
