Gunmen on Sunday attacked a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting the pastor, his wife, and several worshippers during a morning service.
The incident occurred at the newly established branch of the church, throwing the community into panic as armed men stormed the premises and opened fire. Worshippers reportedly fled in different directions as gunshots rang through the area.
The pastor, identified locally as Orlando, was taken away alongside his wife. Residents said the attackers struck without warning, leaving many traumatised. The exact number of abducted persons remained unclear as of press time.
Confirming the development, the Kogi State Government said security agencies had intensified efforts to track down the attackers and rescue the victims.
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, said authorities in Yagba West were working closely with security operatives to ensure the safe return of those kidnapped.
“The authorities of Yagba West Local Government Council are working hard with the security agencies to ensure those kidnapped are rescued alive,” Fanwo stated. “The perpetrators know that Kogi will do everything possible to secure every one of its citizens abducted.
“The Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, is coordinating operations, and we will keep the press updated.”
Fanwo urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, adding that worship centres located in isolated or high-risk areas should consider relocating services temporarily until security improves.
