Six people have been confirmed dead following a fatal collision between a tipper truck and a passenger bus at the Nawfia axis, near Enugu-Agidi Junction, along the Awka–Onitsha expressway in Anambra State.

The crash, which occurred late on Friday, was reportedly caused by excessive speeding and reckless driving involving a yellow-and-black tipper with registration number FGG 21 XV and a red 608 bus marked XQ 398 AA.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bridget Asekhauno, said 32 people were involved—nine male adults and 23 female adults.

According to her, the crash claimed the lives of six people (two men and four women), while five female passengers sustained injuries. The remaining 21 people were rescued unhurt.

“All victims were taken to Amaku General Hospital, where medical staff confirmed the deaths. The road obstruction was cleared, and normal traffic flow has resumed,” she stated.

An eyewitness, who was a passenger in the affected bus, told officials that they were travelling from Ebonyi State to Onitsha after attending a Catholic Women Organisation burial. The witness alleged that the bus driver had been overtaking recklessly in an attempt to make up for lost time before crashing into the approaching tipper.

Asekhauno described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and urged motorists to prioritise safety and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.

She added that the FRSC remains committed to enforcing road safety laws, educating motorists, and providing prompt emergency response during crashes.
