There is growing tension within the University of Jos (UNIJOS) community following the alleged murder of a student by his friend and coursemate, who reportedly buried the body in a shallow grave.
The incident occurred on Friday at Rurso community, where both students lived in an off-campus apartment.
The victim, identified as Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level student of Banking and Finance, was allegedly killed by Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of Agriculture.
According to reports, the two friends were often seen together and had spent most of the day playing football before proceeding to a music studio for a recording session. Upon their return, Nanpon allegedly fetched a machete despite being questioned by other occupants of the compound about his intentions.
“He then struck his friend with the machete,” a source said. “The others raised an alarm and ran to call for help, but by the time they returned, he had buried the body in a shallow grave behind the house.”
Police sources confirmed that other residents of the compound have been invited for questioning. Although the motive for the killing remains unclear, some accounts suggest it might be linked to a disagreement over the music project they were working on.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
