President Bola Tinubu has announced a sweeping reorganisation of Nigeria’s military leadership following reports of an alleged attempted coup, which reportedly led to the cancellation of activities marking the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the President named General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.

Other appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.

The statement noted that the appointments, which take immediate effect, reflect President Tinubu’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and enhance coordination within the Armed Forces.

However, the timing of the changes has sparked widespread speculation that the reshuffle is connected to the reported coup attempt and the recent investigation of several senior military officers.

President Tinubu commended the outgoing Service Chiefs for their service to the nation and urged the newly appointed officers to demonstrate professionalism, loyalty, and unity in the discharge of their duties.
