The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has refuted reports alleging that it imported finished premium motor spirit (PMS) with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, malicious, and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company clarified that the shipment referenced in the reports was not finished petrol but an intermediate feedstock — an unrefined product that requires further processing before it can be converted into usable fuel.
“Dangote Petroleum Refinery has noted reports claiming it is importing finished petrol (PMS) with high sulphur content into Nigeria. These reports are false, malicious, and misleading,” the statement read in part.
Explaining further, the refinery stated that intermediate feedstocks are commonly used in global refining operations, as part of efforts to optimise production and maintain product quality.
“As a world-scale complex refinery, Dangote processes a range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks — a standard global practice — to ensure efficiency and adherence to quality standards,” it said.
The company emphasised its transparency, noting that all import and refining activities are fully documented and shared with relevant authorities.
“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, and will be fully refined in our units to meet Nigerian and international quality standards,” the statement added.
Dangote Refinery also highlighted that all imports come with quality certificates verified by regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with national and international benchmarks. It noted that the refinery’s exports to the United States and Europe — among the most tightly regulated fuel markets — are evidence of its commitment to maintaining high product standards.
Reaffirming its mission to enhance Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency, the refinery said its operations within the free trade zone are geared towards producing cleaner fuels for both local consumption and export.
The statement concluded by assuring Nigerians that Dangote Refinery operates under rigorous quality control systems, underscoring its role as a key contributor to the nation’s drive for energy security and sustainable fuel quality.
