The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that it will suspend routine updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account following the partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Embassy said the pause in online communications was due to a “lapse in appropriations,” the diplomatic term for the failure of Congress to pass a new budget or temporary funding bill.
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the Embassy said.
The mission clarified that posts would be restricted to critical alerts, including security advisories, emergencies, or travel-related warnings for U.S. citizens in Nigeria.
Despite the communication cutback, the Embassy assured that consular operations remain functional. “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” it stated.
This means Nigerians seeking visas and other consular services can still keep their appointments, although possible delays have not been ruled out if the funding standoff drags on.
The suspension of non-essential communication is not unique to Nigeria. U.S. Embassies worldwide, including the one in London, have issued similar notices.
The shutdown, which took effect on Wednesday, follows a budget standoff between President Donald Trump and Congress. The impasse, rooted in disputes over spending priorities, has triggered a halt to several federal agencies and forced hundreds of thousands of government workers to scale back or suspend operations.
Both Republicans and Democrats have traded blame over the deadlock, raising concerns about how long the shutdown may last and the extent of its impact on public services.
The United States has experienced multiple shutdowns in recent decades, often caused by partisan clashes over federal spending.
