A UK medical tribunal has heard that consultant anaesthetist, Dr. Suhail Anjum, left a patient under anaesthetic to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another room at Tameside Hospital, Greater Manchester.
The tribunal was told that Dr. Anjum asked a colleague to cover for him during surgery, claiming he needed a “comfort break.” Instead, he went to another operating theatre, where he had sex with Nurse C. He was later discovered in a “compromising position” by a nurse who reported the incident.
Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council (GMC), confirmed that the patient was unharmed during Anjum’s absence and the procedure was completed without incident.
Dr. Anjum admitted the allegations, describing his actions as “shameful” and accepting full responsibility. “It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame,” he told the panel.
He also issued an apology: “I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.” He added that the incident occurred during a “stressful time” for his family.
The hearing is scheduled to continue on Friday.
