Abdul Jabar Adama has etched his name into the history books as the first Nigerian swimmer to win a medal at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships, held in Romania.

The 17-year-old sensation clinched the silver medal in the men’s 50m Butterfly, clocking an impressive 23.64 seconds—just behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who claimed gold with a time of 23.54 seconds.

Adama’s achievement goes beyond the podium. In a single day, he shattered his own national record twice—first lowering it from 23.81 to 23.61 seconds in the preliminaries, and then again to a remarkable 23.48 seconds in the semifinals.

This groundbreaking performance not only marks Nigeria’s first global medal at the championships but also positions Adama as a promising contender for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles—ushering in a new era for Nigerian swimming on the world stage.
