Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has honoured seven Super Falcons players of Imo origin with a cash reward of ₦30 million each and plots of land in choice areas of Owerri. The gesture follows Nigeria’s recent triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The players—Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu—were received at a special dinner hosted at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Owerri.

Governor Uzodinma said the reward was a gesture of appreciation from the people of Imo State to celebrate their daughters’ achievements on the continental stage. Members of the technical team were also recognized.

“The state is proud of your remarkable performance,” Uzodinma said, noting that Imo will continue to support female athletes and promote greater representation in the Nigeria Women’s League.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing the recognition of excellence in sports, adding that Imo is especially proud to be home to a significant number of the national squad, including Africa’s top female goalkeeper.

Uzodinma encouraged young girls across the state to pursue sports and aim for excellence, emphasizing his administration’s continued investment in youth and sports development.

Earlier, Commissioner for Sports Development, Obinna Onyeocha, applauded the governor’s commitment to sports, describing the event as a testament to his passion and support for athletic excellence.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and families and friends of the honoured players.
