The Anambra State Government has shut down an illegal baby factory operating under the guise of a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area. The facility, “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,” located at 1 School Road near Tansian University, was sealed off on Saturday following a coordinated sting operation.
The raid, conducted by the state Ministry of Health in collaboration with security agencies, came after months of surveillance and intelligence gathering. Officials arrested several staff members, including five pregnant women and ten others, after uncovering evidence of human trafficking and medical malpractice.
Speaking to reporters, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, revealed that the hospital was operating with a fake licence and was run by a self-proclaimed doctor from Delta State. He confirmed that the syndicate was involved in trafficking and exploiting girls aged 15 to 21, many of whom were held against their will and forced into pregnancies. Newborns were allegedly sold through illegal adoption networks.
“This operation is a major breakthrough in the fight against child trafficking and abuse,” Obidike stated. “We are committed to shutting down fake health facilities and protecting the vulnerable.”
The commissioner praised the efforts of the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and the Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team, urging the public to report suspicious medical practices.
Authorities have launched a full investigation, and those arrested are expected to face charges including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and child exploitation.
“We are warning all illegal medical operators in Anambra: close now or face the full force of the law,” Obidike said.
Also present at the raid was Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, Acting Director of Medical Services, along with other health officials.
Rescued teenage girls and infants are currently receiving medical care and psychological support.
