Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last general elections, has formally resigned from the party.

In a resignation letter made public on Wednesday and confirmed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and dissatisfaction with the current direction of the PDP as reasons for his decision.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote.

“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”

He expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded by the party, including serving two full terms as Vice President and running twice as the PDP’s presidential candidate.

Atiku’s resignation follows his recent involvement in forming a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which includes notable figures such as Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai. The coalition aims to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
