…Iran-linked group claims responsibilities
A U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft has crashed in western Iraq, killing four service members, while a second KC-135 involved in the mission landed safely.
The incident occurred during Operation Epic Fury in friendly airspace, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), which stressed that the crash was not caused by hostile or friendly fire. Rescue operations for remaining crew members are ongoing.
Contradicting the official U.S. account, an Iran-affiliated group, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, has claimed responsibility, saying it targeted the tanker in defense of Iraqi airspace. The claim has been reported by multiple international news agencies.
“This was a tragic loss for our Air Force. Rescue efforts are underway, and further details will be released as they become available,” USCENTCOM said.
The crash is the latest in a series of U.S. aircraft losses amid escalating tensions between U.S.-led forces and Iran-backed militias in the region. U.S. authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased, pending next-of-kin notifications.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to verify the claim by the armed group.
USCENTCOM said further details would be released as investigations and rescue operations continue, asking for patience as authorities work to gather more information and provide clarity for the families of the affected service members.
