Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno hints at a potential defection from the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, with his recent comments and cabinet shakeup fueling speculation of a switch to the APC.

Speaking during a constituency outreach event in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area, the governor compared the PDP to a faulty aircraft, implying he is open to boarding a more “reliable” political vehicle—an analogy widely interpreted as a nod to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“If you were set to travel with Ibom Airline and it developed a fault that prevented it from taking off, wouldn’t you board the next available flight to reach your destination?” he asked the crowd.

The Governor had earlier backed a 2nd tenure for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the state was willing to support the APC leader in 2027.

Governor Eno’s comments come at a time of internal friction within the PDP, as several high-profile members have defected to rival parties. Most notably, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently joined the APC, intensifying speculation about further defections ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite his remarks, the Akwa Ibom chapter of the PDP has publicly endorsed Eno as its sole governorship candidate for the 2027 election, praising his leadership and achievements under the Arise Agenda. The endorsement further solidifies his standing within the party, at least for now.

This strategic move effectively sidelines other aspirants, reinforcing Eno’s political leverage in a state that has been a PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

In a related development, Governor Eno recently dissolved his cabinet, just hours before visiting the PDP state secretariat in Uyo. Political analysts interpret the shake-up as a sign of realignment or preparation for a possible party switch.

With the opposition APC still struggling to establish a strong foothold in Akwa Ibom, Eno appears poised for a second term, regardless of his party affiliation.
