The Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan has officially dissolved the 10-year marriage between Mrs. Abibat Oladimeji and Mr. Nurudeen Oladimeji, citing persistent interference from the husband’s mother as the root cause of irreconcilable differences.
In her ruling, the court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, declared the marriage had broken down beyond repair, noting that Abibat had moved out of the matrimonial home and no longer had affection for her husband.
“The court cannot force the petitioner to stay in a marriage she no longer wants. The union is hereby dissolved,” Akintayo stated.
The court awarded custody of the couple’s two children, aged five and 10, to Abibat. It also issued a restraining order preventing Nurudeen from harassing or interfering with her personal life.
Abibat, a trader, told the court that her husband’s mother had an undue influence on his decisions, often to the detriment of her and the children. She further claimed to have funded the construction of their family home and said the emotional support she once enjoyed had disappeared.
In his defense, Nurudeen described his wife as disobedient and unruly, urging the court to encourage her to return. However, the court dismissed his plea and upheld Abibat’s request for a formal separation.
