Amidst growing uncertainty over the 46 minister’s fate and national protest, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 7 a.m., as part of the celebrations marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

This announcement was made on Monday, September 30, 2024, through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, and it came amongst fears that the President could sack his entire cabinet.

Some key ministers, including finance, defence and agriculture, are facing increasing scrutiny in the face of biting economic hardship, insecurity and galloping inflation, soaring prices of essential goods and foodstuffs.

There have also been increased calls for the reduction of the bloated 46-member cabinet (excluding advisers and other aides) in the face of the current hardship in the country, and there are hints that the president could dissolve the entire cabinet.

Thousands of Nigerians are expected to hit the streets on the 64th anniversary of the nation’s independence, and a strong speech, including a possible sack of nonperforming ministers, would assuage their anger.

In the statement, Onanuga emphasized that the broadcast will be one of the key highlights in a series of activities marking Nigeria’s 64th year of independence, but Nigerians expect it to address crucial national issues, reflect on the country’s journey since 1960, and outline the government’s plans for the future.

The President is also expected to reflect on the achievements of his administration since assuming office earlier in 2023, as well as address ongoing issues such as rising inflation, youth unemployment, insecurity in parts of the country, and the fight against corruption.

Given the gravity of the issues facing Nigeria today, this address is anticipated with great interest by Nigerians at home and abroad. It will provide an opportunity for the President to reassure citizens of his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises, especially as the country continues to navigate both global and domestic challenges.

The statement from Onanuga further advised all television and radio stations, as well as other electronic media platforms, to align their broadcast services with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in order to air the address live.

“The nationwide broadcast will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 7 a.m. as part of the activities commemorating the 64th Independence Anniversary of the nation. All television, radio, and electronic media outlets are strongly encouraged to link up with the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the live transmission of this important event,” the statement read.
