The much-touted return of ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson to the boxing ring after 20 years in retirement ended in a lopsided defeat for the former undisputable heavyweight champion of the world.
Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in their highly anticipated fight on Friday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Tyson was reportedly paid $20 million to return to the ring
The contest divided opinion across the boxing world, with many prominent figures decrying the prospect of Tyson lacing up his gloves nearly 40 years after his professional debut and 19 years after his last officially sanctioned fight.
The boxing bout, streamed live on Netflix, consisted of eight two-minute rounds, and was highly anticipated, but it delivered less as the former heavyweight champion failed to deliver.
Paul, who is 27 years old, outboxed the 58-year-old Tyson throughout the fight, with the judges scoring the fight 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73 in favour of Paul.
Tyson, a legendary former heavyweight champion, landed only 18 punches out of 97 attempts, while Paul landed 78 out of 278 punches.
Despite Tyson’s legendary status, Paul’s size, strength, and youth proved too much for the older fighter. Tyson’s return to the ring after nearly 20 years ended in a lopsided decision loss.
It was a memorable night for boxing fans, but many believe it’s time for Tyson to retire from professional boxing
