The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued President Bola Tinubu for not prosecuting contractors who allegedly took N167 billion from 31 government agencies without completing any projects.
The Attorney General, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Finance, Mr. Olawale Edun, were also joined in the suit.
The lawsuit, filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos, calls for the prosecution of companies that took the money without delivering results. SERAP also wants Edun to make the names of the contractors involved public.
SERAP argues that the alleged corruption deprives poor Nigerians of public services and leads to unnecessary costs for health, education, and other services. They say holding these companies accountable would reduce waste and fraud in public spending.
According to the 2021 report by the Auditor-General, 31 agencies paid over N167 billion for undelivered projects. The Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (NBET) alone paid N100 billion.
Other agencies involved include the Nigerian Correctional Service and the National Pension Commission.
SERAP believes transparency and accountability are crucial for democracy.
The court has not set a hearing date.
