The son of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder following the couple’s deaths at their Los Angeles home.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that Nick Reiner, 32, is accused of killing his parents, who were found dead on Sunday. Prosecutors allege the killings were carried out with a knife.

Hochman said the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty, though no decision has yet been made on whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment. He described cases involving family members as “some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching” his office handles because of their intimate and often brutal nature.

Police said Nick Reiner was later located in a Los Angeles park and arrested without incident. He is undergoing medical clearance before appearing in court for arraignment, where he will be formally read the charges and enter a plea.

Rob Reiner, an iconic figure in American cinema, directed and produced a string of acclaimed films, including When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, and A Few Good Men. He was also known for his outspoken support for liberal causes and Democratic politics.

Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood and political circles, with colleagues and friends praising Reiner’s creativity, integrity, and long-standing influence on film and television. Michele Singer Reiner was also remembered as a respected photographer and producer.

Authorities urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues, saying further details would emerge through the court process.
