Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to Bola Tinubu to reconsider his directive ordering the withdrawal of police operatives from Very Important Persons (VIPs), citing concerns over the safety of federal lawmakers.

President Tinubu had, on November 23, ordered the redeployment of police officers attached to VIPs to bolster efforts against rising security challenges nationwide. Under the directive, VIPs requiring armed protection are to seek personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the police.

Speaking on Friday during a joint sitting of the National Assembly shortly after the President presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill, Akpabio warned that the decision had exposed lawmakers to heightened security risks.

“Only one concern, Mr President. As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some of the National Assembly members said I should let you know that they may not be able to go home today because they may be picked up,” the Senate President said.

He urged the President to review the policy, adding, “On that note, we plead with Mr President for a review of the decision. May God bless you, may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and may God bless our National Assembly.”

Akpabio also commended the President for the economic reforms undertaken since the administration assumed office on May 29, 2023, saying the measures were beginning to yield positive results.

“Our national story has never been one of perfection. It has always been a story of perseverance, and the people are motivated passionately,” he said, assuring Nigerians of better days ahead.

He further pledged the legislature’s support, stating that the National Assembly was ready to receive and consider the 2026 budget, while sharing in both the challenges and achievements of the administration’s reform agenda.
