Nigerian author and social media influencer, Reno Omokri has taken a swipe at Afrobeat singer David Adeleke (Davido), over his perceived disparaging comment on Nigeria during a recent interview.
Omokri, the self-acclaimed Table-Shaker’, was reacting to the recent feat achieved by Davido’s archrival, Wizkid (Ayodeji Ibrahim, who recently set a new music streaming record on Spotify with his latest release. Morayo.
He attributed Wizkid’s growing image on the world stage to his respect and promotion of his country.
The Ojuelegba crooner hit 48 million streams in the first six days of Morayo release.
In his reaction, Omokri in congratulating him, also took a not-so-veiled swipe at Davido, whose rivalry with Wizkid is an open secret.
He said, “Congratulations to Ayodeji Ibrahim, AKA Wizkid, for setting a new record of the most streamed album by an African artiste on Spotify for its first week with Morayo”
While noting that the song achieved 48 million streams in six days to break the previous record held by South Africa’s Tyla, at 46.4 million streams in a week, he described Wizkid as a legitimate son who is promoting his country, Nigeria.
He said it was “no surprise that he is also a Grammy winner” while adding, “When you raise your country’s image, you are also likely to raise a Grammy,” in an apparent attack on Davido, who has not won the esteemed award.
To rub it in, the former spokesperson to President Goodluck Jonathan posted a picture of the Grammy Award won by Wizkid in his duet with American Pop singer, Beyonce for ‘Brownskin Girl’
In conclusion, he described Wizkid as an ‘Omoluabi atata’ (well-brought-up child”, adding, “May God continue to promote Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun as he promotes Nigeria.
