Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued a 28-year-old man, identified as Okwudili David Onyiba, who attempted to take his own life by climbing a high-tension power transmission pole in the Awada area of Idemili North Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, behind the Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, Awada. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in an official statement issued on Wednesday.

“Anambra State Police Operatives attached to the Awada Division, in the evening of 2nd September 2025, successfully rescued a man who attempted to commit suicide by climbing a high-tension power transmission pole,” the statement read.

According to Ikenga, officers responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, they secured the area to prevent harm and managed a large crowd that had gathered at the scene.

After several minutes of coordinated persuasion by police operatives and concerned members of the public, the man eventually climbed down safely. He was immediately taken into protective custody, where he identified himself as Mr. Okwudili David Onyiba, aged 28.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has since ordered a thorough medical and mental health evaluation for Onyiba, and directed that necessary support be provided to ensure his well-being.

The Command used the opportunity to appeal to the public to prioritize peaceful and lawful methods of dealing with personal or emotional struggles.

“We urge members of the public to always seek lawful and peaceful solutions to personal challenges, and to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress,” the statement concluded.
