A suspected cult-related killing has left a 30-year-old man dead in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after attackers reportedly abducted and beheaded him in a territory linked to a rival gang.
The victim, identified as Ebi and widely known by the nickname “Npotor,” was allegedly targeted by members of the Bobos cult group after entering the Yenegue axis of the city, an area security sources describe as their stronghold.
Preliminary findings indicate that the assailants restrained him inside an unoccupied building before carrying out the killing. When authorities later recovered the remains, the body was naked, the hands were tied, and the head had been removed.
Investigators believe the attack is connected to an ongoing rivalry between the Bobos and the Greenlanders cult groups. The deceased was said to be affiliated with the Greenlanders, who are considered dominant around the Igbogene area of the state capital.
Community residents, speaking off record due to fear of reprisals, said tensions between the two groups have lingered and occasionally turned violent.
Police units from the Igbogene division responded to the scene and evacuated the corpse. Bayelsa Police spokesperson, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident and said a manhunt is underway to identify and arrest those behind the killing.
