Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the Federal Government’s approval of N142 billion for constructing bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, calling it another example of misplaced priorities and poor leadership.

In a statement titled “N142 Billion for Bus Terminals” issued on Friday, Obi argued that the move reflects a troubling mismanagement of the nation’s limited resources.”

The success or failure of any nation’s development depends on how its resources are prioritized,” Obi said.

“Approving N142 billion for just six bus terminals highlights a lack of competence, focus, and leadership.”

He contrasted the allocation with the 2024 budget for healthcare, pointing out that all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres combined received less than N100 billion.”

This is deeply concerning, especially given the state of our healthcare system,” he added.

“With over 20 million Nigerians living with mental health issues, according to the WHO, this funding decision is not only a misplaced priority—it’s a tragic irony. This is not governance.”

While the Federal Executive Council defends the project as a step toward modernising transport infrastructure, Obi insists that critical sectors like healthcare should be prioritised over such ventures.
