The Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed the commencement of a fresh reconciliation process aimed at resolving internal disputes and reuniting aggrieved factions within the party.

In a statement personally signed on Wednesday, Turaki, whose leadership group is reportedly backed by several party governors, disclosed that discussions have begun between opposing sides to find a lasting resolution to the crisis rocking the party.

He said party leaders had “broken the ice” and were exploring multiple pathways to restore unity, urging supporters to immediately scale down inflammatory rhetoric and actions that could undermine ongoing peace efforts.

“I can unequivocally confirm that, as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution. We urge our supporters across the board to immediately de-escalate high-tempered communications and actions, so as not to jeopardise the ongoing peace efforts,” Turaki stated.

He reassured aspirants that the PDP would field candidates for all elective positions in line with Article 6(2) of the party’s constitution as amended in 2017.

“To all aspirants who have stood with us thus far, we assure you that, by the grace of God, our party will field candidates for all elective offices,” he said.

Turaki also expressed appreciation to Nigerians who have continued to identify with the party despite its recent challenges, noting that many had registered through its electronic membership platform.

He maintained that democracy requires not only periodic elections but also a strong opposition and vibrant civil society to ensure accountability in governance. Describing the PDP as the only surviving legacy party in the current republic, Turaki recalled its 16-year stewardship at the federal level and reiterated its commitment to defending and consolidating Nigeria’s democracy.

He further called on those in positions of authority to remain mindful that power ultimately belongs to the people and that governance must reflect the will of citizens.

The NWC also passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, commending their resilience and steadfast leadership amid recent challenges confronting the party.

Turaki concluded by assuring Nigerians that the PDP remains active and will participate fully in the forthcoming elections, offering what he described as a credible platform for competitive political engagement at all levels.
