A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in a fatal road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that was conveying former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua, and two of his associates.
The court granted the 46-year-old defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, and adjourned the case to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.
Kayode is standing trial over the accident, which resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, both members of Joshua’s boxing camp. He was arraigned on a four-count charge.
The charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence. The offences were said to be contrary to the provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
During proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution transmit the case file to the office of the State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice, in the interest of justice.
The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, stating that the defence was ready to proceed with the trial. However, the presiding magistrate, Somefun, granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25.
The accident, which occurred last year, left Joshua injured, while his two friends died instantly after the vehicle reportedly crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
Following his recovery, Joshua later joined family members, friends and associates at the London Central Mosque to pay his last respects to the deceased, who served as his conditioning coach and personal trainer.
