The Nigerian social media space was awash on Wednesday with reports that the National Youth Service Corps had started paying a N77,000 monthly allowance to serving corps members.
It would be recalled that corps members (corpers) have been agitating for the increase their allawee (allowance) from N30,000 per month to the new minimum wage that was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2024
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had promised an increase in the allowance of Corps members in September 2024, but the promise was met with disappointment following delays in the implementation of the new allowance.
The report, which started late on Tuesday, gained traction on Wednesday media sites such as TikTok, Facebook and X (formerly) Twitter.
However, Naija Daily News gathered many corps members who spoke to our reporter said they had yet to receive the new amount.
Sarah, a corp member serving in Lagos, told our reporter, “I have also heard the rumor, but I have not received my allowance, and I don’t know anyone who has received N77,000.”
A serving Corps member in Kogi, Jessica Duru, confirmed to Naija Daily News on Wednesday evening that payment of the promised N77,000 allowances had commenced
She said: “Yes, it’s true, they have started paying 77k. I have not received it, but my roommate received hers this evening, so I’m patiently waiting for mine.
“Everyone is happy because it’s been almost six months since we were promised an increment in our allowance”, she added.
This increment aligns with the new minimum wage adjustments advocated by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the government.
