A former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has debunked reports of his plan to dump the party for a new political platofrm ahead of the 2027 election.
Rather than leave the PDP, as he did in 2014, Atiku said he was advocating a strong coalition of stakeholders to dislodge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
This was disclosed in a statement by the former Vice-President’s media office, which was made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.
The statement said, “We have noticed that some news platforms are spreading unverified information claiming that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party.
“We wish to clarify that the news of Atiku defecting to another party is entirely baseless and illogical. Recall that Atiku Abubakar has consistently called for a coalition of opposition political parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, aiming to oust the incompetent and harmful All Progressives Congress and provide Nigerians with a new lease on life.
“Atiku is advocating for a robust coalition that would include all opposition parties, including the PDP. Therefore, it is false and unfounded to allege that the Waziri is leaving the PDP. Such an allegation contradicts the objective of the grand coalition, which the former vice president is currently leading alongside other prominent political leaders in the country.
“We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bona fide member of the PDP, the main opposition party. Any insinuation to the contrary is designed to confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition working to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC.”
