Bayo Ojulari, the new Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), has confirmed that oil drilling activities in northern Nigeria will soon resume, marking a renewed push for energy development in the region.

In an interview with BBC News Hausa, Ojulari disclosed that the Kolmani oil field—located between Bauchi and Gombe states—will be the focal point of this renewed effort. He also pledged to complete the critical Ajaokuta–Kano gas pipeline project, which is expected to boost industrial activities across northern Nigeria.

“We are committed to continuing exploration in Kolmani and other locations. Completing the Ajaokuta–Kano pipeline is also a priority, as it will reactivate closed factories and spur new investments,” Ojulari said.

The Kolmani project was originally inaugurated in November 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, sparking excitement across the north. It was the first time commercial oil drilling was launched in the region. However, progress stalled for undisclosed reasons, and further announcements—such as a planned 2023 drilling project in Nasarawa State—never materialised.

Ojulari’s assurance signals a fresh chapter for the North’s oil ambitions. He emphasised that the initiative is driven by national interest and reiterated NNPC’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Reacting to mixed responses following his appointment, Ojulari, who hails from the north, urged Nigerians to look beyond regional sentiment and rally behind national development.

“I was surprised by some of the reactions to my appointment. This is not just a northern project; it’s for all Nigerians. I ask for your support and prayers to help us deliver a lasting impact,” he said.

Beyond oil exploration, Ojulari is also addressing strategic industry relationships. He revealed that efforts are underway to resolve the longstanding dispute between NNPC and the Dangote Petroleum Refinery—Africa’s largest refinery project.

Acknowledging a strained relationship under previous leadership, Ojulari stressed the importance of cooperation moving forward.

“We’ve already begun steps to repair the relationship with Dangote Refinery. The goal is to build a partnership that serves the best interest of the Nigerian people,” he noted.
