The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms and rain on Monday in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states. Other areas in the northern region are expected to remain sunny with some cloud cover. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely in the afternoon or evening over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe.
For the central region, cloudy morning skies are expected, with light rain and thunderstorms anticipated in parts of Niger. Later in the day, thunderstorms and rain may affect Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Niger states.
In the southern region, morning cloud cover is forecast, with light rainfall expected in the afternoon or evening over Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
On Tuesday, sunny skies with scattered clouds are expected in the north during the morning. Thunderstorms and moderate rain may occur later in the day in parts of Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna. The central region may see morning thunderstorms in Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa, followed by rain later in Plateau, Niger, FCT, and Nasarawa.
In the south, cloudiness is expected in the morning with potential rainfall in Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Moderate rainfall is forecast in the afternoon or evening across Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.
By Wednesday, the northern region will see sunny skies with some cloud cover. Morning thunderstorms and rain are likely in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with further rain expected later in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi.
In the central region, moderate rainfall is expected from the afternoon into the evening across the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara. Parts of the south, particularly Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, may experience morning rain, while moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated in the afternoon or evening over Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet advised the public to take precautions, noting that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms. Residents should secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances. People are also urged to avoid sheltering under tall trees during storms.
Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather briefings from NiMet for flight planning.
