The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across many parts of Nigeria from Monday, July 7, to Wednesday, July 10, 2025. The agency issued the alert in its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, cautioning residents to prepare for stormy weather conditions expected in both northern and southern regions of the country.

According to the forecast, thunderstorms are expected to begin on Monday morning in parts of Taraba and Adamawa, with rain and thunder spreading later in the day to Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, and other northern states. On Tuesday, sunny intervals are likely during the morning hours in the North, but isolated thunderstorms are expected later in the day in Bauchi, Taraba, Katsina, Kano, Adamawa, and Kebbi. By Wednesday, storms are anticipated in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Gombe during the morning, with further thunderstorms affecting Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, and other northern states as the day progresses.

In the southern parts of the country, cloudy conditions will dominate the mornings, particularly in coastal areas including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa. These will be followed by heavy downpours in the afternoon and evening across states such as Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, and the coastal region. On Tuesday and Wednesday, early morning rain is likely in Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta, followed by widespread rain showers extending into the evening across the South.

In the North-Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, NiMet forecasts cloudy to partly cloudy conditions in the mornings, with isolated thunderstorms and rain expected later in the day throughout the forecast period. States such as Kogi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kwara are all likely to be affected.

NiMet has urged members of the public to take safety precautions during the forecast period. The agency warned that strong winds may precede rainstorms and advised securing loose objects to prevent damage or injury. Residents are also encouraged to unplug electrical appliances during heavy rainfall, avoid driving under intense storm conditions, and stay away from tall trees. Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to ensure safe flight operations throughout the period.
