A tragic incident unfolded in Jalingo, Taraba State, as a newly recruited soldier, identified as Dauda Dedan, allegedly stabbed a police constable, Aaron John, to death.
Confirming the incident to journalists on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Taraba State Command, James Lashen, said the fatal altercation occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Monday in Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo.
According to Lashen, Constable John had responded to a distress call from residents reporting a dispute involving the soldier. In the course of trying to intervene, John was allegedly stabbed by the soldier.
“The late Constable John was responding to a report of a disturbance involving the soldier and some residents when he was fatally attacked,” Lashen said.
He further revealed that the suspect fled the scene and remains at large. However, the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation and assured the police of full cooperation in apprehending the suspect.
“We have reported the matter to the 6 Brigade headquarters of the Nigerian Army. They have assured us of their commitment to tracking down the fugitive soldier so he can face justice,” the PPRO stated.
Lashen emphasized that despite the incident, the relationship between the police and the army remains strong and cooperative. “Both security agencies are working closely to ensure the suspect is arrested and brought to justice,” he added.
