A former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Uzor, along with his son, Chinedum Eyinnaya Orji, and three others have been docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged N61bn fraud.
Theodore was governor of Abia State from 2007 to 2015, while his son, Chinedum, presided over the Abia State Assembly from 2019 to 2013.
The father and son are standing trial before Justice Lilian Abai of the Abia State High Court sitting in Umuahia on a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering.
Abia, although one of the richest in the Southeast zone of Nigeria, is one of the least developed.
The young Orji, who was a member of the House of Assembly from 2015 to 2023, was seen as the de facto governor as he reportedly ran the affairs of the state.
Then Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, a former aide of the senior Orji, reportedly handed over the state to him, Chinedum was a member and later Speaker of the house.
