A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, on Wednesday took her husband, Usman Shuaibu, before a Shari’a court in the Magajin Gari area of Kaduna State, accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities and providing her with only N50 for food.
Bello, who communicated through sign language interpreted by Aisha Sulaiman, told the court that her husband was subjecting her to hardship and hunger.
“We got married in 2016, and initially, my parents supported us with food. The problems began when their support stopped,” she said.
According to her, Shuaibu, a tailor by profession, has consistently failed to provide for the household. She further alleged that when she gave birth, her husband couldn’t afford the hospital bill, which was eventually paid by his mother.
She added that efforts by both families to resolve the issue had not yielded any change in her husband’s behavior, prompting her decision to seek the court’s intervention and request a divorce.
In his defense, Shuaibu denied the allegations made against him.Presiding over the case, Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad directed both parties to return to court on August 25 with their parents or guardians for further hearing.(NAN)
