A woman has been apprehended by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly leaving her newborn baby in a bush in Akwanga Local Government Area.

The infant, swaddled in a piece of cloth, was found near a primary school on AA Koto Street in Akwanga and promptly reported to the authorities by vigilant residents.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel confirmed the arrest to the press in Lafia on Thursday. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation and legal action.

The suspect, reported to be a final-year student at the College of Education in Akwanga, was identified as the infant’s mother and taken into custody.

This incident has caused shock and outrage among locals, highlighting the urgency of addressing cases of child abandonment in the state and beyond.

This incident echoes similar cases across Nigeria, including the recent rescue of a newborn baby girl in Kebbi State. Residents have underscored the need for stronger measures to prevent such incidents and protect vulnerable infants.
