Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has dismissed as fake a viral graphic circulating on social media which claims he described Peter Obi as “a great man but not fit for president now” ahead of the 2027 election.
The graphic, which has been widely shared online, attributes the statement to Melaye in his capacity as a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggesting he questioned Obi’s suitability for the presidency.
However, reacting to the claim on his official account on X on Friday morning, Melaye categorically denied making the statement.
“This is fake and not from me,” he wrote.
His response effectively debunks the graphic, which features photographs of Melaye and Obi alongside a caption claiming the former senator criticised Obi’s presidential ambition.
Political observers say misleading graphics and fabricated quotations have become increasingly common on social media as early alignments and debates surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election begin to intensify.
Melaye’s clarification underscores growing concerns about the spread of political misinformation online, particularly content designed to portray public figures as attacking or endorsing rivals without verified statements. By publicly disowning the quote, the former lawmaker indicated that the viral message does not reflect his position regarding Obi or the 2027 presidential contest.
