Niger Delta activist, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) has been recognized as the most significant individual contributor to the establishment and growth of the Nigeria Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta State.
The recognition came from the university’s staff during a special award ceremony, where Tompolo was honoured for his contributions to the institution’s establishment, take-off and progress.
Mr Iseru Ebike, a lecturer and team leader, praised Tompolo for his unwavering dedication to the university’s growth, highlighting the numerous intervention projects that he initiated and his sacrifice to help the institution overcome its foundational challenges.
“Your efforts have significantly improved the working and learning conditions for both staff and students. You remain our most important benefactor, and your vision was the driving force behind the establishment of this institution.”
Ebike went on to commend Tompolo’s decision to invest locally, at a time when many were focused on foreign ventures, remarking, “You chose to build and equip a world-class institution here, in a location many would have deemed unsuitable,” he said, referencing Tompolo’s ambitious Mieka Dive project, which became take-off of Nigeria’s first Maritime University.
He thanked the Ijaw leader’s commitment to ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the university for nearly six years, noting that the peaceful academic and social environment was largely due to his efforts.
Tompolo, speaking through Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, his media consultant, said, “It’s heartening to see the seed we planted flourishing.”
Bebenimibo, a Delta State University don and long-time associate, described Tompolo as a person of extraordinary generosity and humanity.
“Some of you have advanced to Senior Lecturer positions, and others are progressing through earned promotions. Let’s work together to elevate this institution to new heights. It is truly one of a kind,” he concluded.
