A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 26-year-old man, Usman Aliyu, who allegedly assaulted his friend into a coma during a dispute over a woman.
Aliyu, who resides in Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the request of the prosecuting counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, who asked that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The case was adjourned until September 11 for a hearing on the bail application.
According to Inspector Leo, the incident occurred on August 14 around 4:00 p.m. in the Malali area of Kaduna. He alleged that the defendant, appearing intoxicated, went to the home of his friend, Shuaibu Hassan, armed with a cutlass and attacked him over a woman both men had been romantically involved with.
“The victim is currently in critical condition at the hospital, and his chances of survival remain uncertain,” the prosecutor told the court.
The offence, Leo stated, violates Section 221 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
