The Labour Party (LP) has affirmed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader and extended goodwill to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, disclosed this in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday to deliberate on issues affecting the party’s stability, growth and strategic direction.
According to the communiqué, the NWC unanimously recognised Governor Otti as the National Leader of the Labour Party. It also wished Obi well in his future political endeavours following his exit from the party.
“The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi well in his future political endeavours and in his new political party,” the communiqué stated.
The party further announced that the NWC had recognised former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. It explained that the decision was in line with the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which ruled that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had elapsed.
The Labour Party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accord Usman and Nwokocha all rights and privileges due to them, in line with the Supreme Court verdict earlier cited by the electoral body.
The NWC also reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the party would be conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the party’s constitution, urging members at all levels to actively participate in the congress processes.
The party thanked its members and Nigerians for their continued interest and confidence, insisting that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible and committed to building a Nigeria based on equal opportunity, social justice and good governance.
The Labour Party emerged third in the 2023 presidential election, with Peter Obi as its flagbearer.
