The Labour Party has accused political opponents and supporters of its former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, of orchestrating an attack on its National Chairman, Julius Abure, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Abure was reportedly assaulted on Friday by a woman identified as Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama P, a vocal supporter of Mr Obi.
The incident occurred while Abure was waiting to board a Max Air flight to Benin. Witnesses said the confrontation spilt into the aircraft, continued throughout the journey, and escalated upon arrival in Benin before security operatives intervened.
In a statement on Saturday, party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh described the incident as a “suicidal aggression” and alleged that it was a deliberate plot to destabilize the Labour Party.
He added that the attacker, a content creator, later released a video boasting of her connections and threatening to continue targeting Mr Abure and other executives.
The party called on the police to identify and prosecute those behind the assault, while appealing to its members to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
Abure’s leadership has remained under pressure since the 2023 elections, with multiple legal challenges and a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year deepening divisions within the party.
