2023 presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has admitted that choosing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for the 2027 general elections was a challenging yet crucial decision for Nigeria’s political future.

Obi explained that this decision came after careful consideration of the country’s current difficulties and the pressing need for transformative leadership.

“Yesterday, coalition members officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for the 2027 Nigerian General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark appointed as National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary,” Obi shared in a post on X on Thursday.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he noted.

The coalition members, which include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, formally endorsed the ADC as their political vehicle for 2027 at the unveiling in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritize the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” Obi said.

The 63-year-old, who has proposed to serve a single term in office, stressed that no single group could bring about the sweeping change Nigeria needs, saying: “To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy.”
